ALTON 4,

FLEET SPURS 1

ALTON continued their excellent run with a fairly comfortable win against Fleet Spurs on Tuesday.

As early as the third minute, Callum Burch forced Fleet keeper Mark Appleby into action and Burch went on to have a fine game giving left-back Adam Harris a torrid afternoon.

But it was not all one-way traffic, though, and the game ebbed and flowed, with Alton having the better chances. Henry Fox shot wide from a Scott Sanderson flick and then, following a delightful cross-field ball from Taylor Watts, Burch also missed the target.

At the other end, Dan Bone forced a decent save from Kallum Lunn and the resultant corner bobbled around dangerously before being cleared.

Sanderson saw a header cleared off the line, but the opening goal was not long in coming as Mitch Parker timed his run perfectly to slam home Burch’s deliciously tempting cross.

And the Brewers soon doubled their lead. Fleet only half-cleared a corner and Fox shot home from the edge of the box to send Alton into the break with a two-goal cushion.

In the second half, Jonny Way began to get forward from left-back and it was his cross that led to Fox having a shot blocked and with the rebound falling back to him, he set up Sean Hayes who curled the ball home for Alton’s third.

Fox scored the fourth himself when he ran on to Sanderson’s flicked header to give the keeper no chance.

Almost immediately, Fleet reduced the arrears. Alton defender Ali Gill was caught out of position and Chris Rose pounced to score.

The resurgent Spurs forced Adam Aimable to clear off the line with Lunn beaten. The Alton keeper was alert to tip over a shot from Rose, while the Brewers should have exploited the gaps left in defence as the visitors pushed forward.

Alton thus extended their winning run to six matches in front of 133 spectators at The Enclosure, but face a stiff examination next Tuesday (Jan 3) when they visit Baffin Milton, currently third in the Sydenhams League Division One.
