Alton Town 2, Infinity 2

(Alton won 4-3 on penalties)

ALTON came through a tough game against Infinity in the Hampshire FA Russell Cotes Cup on penalties on Tuesday night.

Matt Bunyan gave Alton the lead on six minutes after a flowing move from the back. Ben Williams broke up an Infinity attack, played the ball out to Gavin Muir, who beat his defender and crossed into the box. The ball fell to Josh Maloney whose pass was turned in by Bunyan.

Both sides had chances to score before two goals in two minutes gave Infinity a half-time lead.

First Jamie White equalised when he scored from inside the box, before Alton half cleared a corner and from the resulting cross Josh Cripps headed Infinity in front.

Alton came more into the game in the second half and created a few chances to equalise but they were unable to find a way through. But the seemingly elusive equaliser finally came with 10 minutes left, as Bunyan curled a free kick into the top corner from 25 yards.

Both teams missed their first spot kicks, before converted penalties by Josh Maloney, Ryan Thomas, Max Smith and Matt Graham, coupled with Matt Petts saving Infinity’s fourth penalty, put Alton through to the next round.
