ALTON 2, PEWSEY VALE 0
ALTON followed up their welcome success in midweek with another victory against a side in and around them in the Sydenhams League Division One table.
While not at their best, two goals from Scott Sanderson were enough to give the Brewers the three points against Pewsey Vale.
The first half was something of a non-event, with both sides limited to half-chances. In fact, the main excitement came when Alton’s Rob Way appeared to be elbowed, an incident apparently missed by all three officials and most of the spectators.
Neither side really tested the keepers before Alton scored a vital goal on the stroke of half-time. A free-kick was only half cleared, the ball was crossed back in, and Sanderson rose to head home.
The second half started with Pewsey battling to get back into the game, but the Alton defence stood firm and, when it was breached, goalkeeper Kallum Lunn was equal to everything thrown at him.
Ryan Bunney was unfortunate not to make the game safe when he raced onto a Mark Taylor through-ball, only to be denied by Pewsey keeper Sam Tuttle.
However, on 65 minutes, Sanderson did increase the lead when he shot home from the edge of the area.
The game then became scrappy and it was easy to see why both sides are at the wrong end of the table.
But two wins on the bounce should give Alton renewed purpose as they head into two tricky away games.
