SHREWSBURY TN 5, ALDERSHOT TN 0
THE romance of the FA Cup was in short supply in Shropshire as the League One leaders ruthlessly capitalised upon Aldershot Town’s defensive frailties.
Though the margin of defeat was perhaps a tad harsh on the Shots, Shrewsbury, who until last week were the only unbeaten side in the Football League, gave a clinical lesson in taking chances to leave the visitors horribly exposed.
Inevitably, it was two former Aldershot players who led the charge. Winger Alex Rodman and striker Stefan Payne between them had a hand in four of the five goals.
A third familiar face, Omar Beckles, had a shaky afternoon playing out of position at left-back, but Aldershot were unable to exploit this rare weakness in Paul Hurst’s strong Shrewsbury side.
“The scoreline tells you the story. Shrewsbury showed us why they are top of League One,” said Shots manager Gary Waddock.
“There’s a gulf (between the two teams) and that showed up today. It was a difficult afternoon – they created a lot of chances and our back line allowed them to get in quite a few times. We had a few good moments, but wanted to do better, of course.”
Mark Smith had already made a strong save from Payne’s header, and Ben Godfrey twice had long-range efforts, before Shrews took a 20th-minute lead.
Shaun Whalley released right-back Joe Riley who made an unchecked overlapping run and his deep cross invited Rodman to squeeze a header into the net.
Just four minutes later, Payne’s deft pass inside Cheye Alexander found Rodman making a darting run which only ended when Smith’s hand caught his ankle. Whalley fired the penalty down the middle and suddenly Shrewsbury were in control.
Fabien Robert was impressing for the National League side, but the Shots continued to toil to little effect.
Smith scrambled Aristote Nsiala’s downward header over the crossbar and, trailing 2-0 at half-time, Aldershot were just about still in the tie.
But three goals in six second-half minutes put Shrewsbury in an unassailable position.
On 62 minutes, Manny Oyeleke mis-controlled Alexander’s pass in the centre circle and, in an instant, Bryn Morris had sent Whalley streaking down the right. After drawing Smith off his line, Whalley opted for the simple pass inside, leaving Payne with a tap-in.
The cheers were barely over when Rodman, set up by Morris, spun past Oyeleke and his low pull-back was swept over Smith into the net by substitute Arthur Gnahoua.
The rout was complete barely 100 seconds later. The usually reliable Oyeleke was again sloppy in possession and Whalley chipped a pass over a high defensive line for another substitute, Carlton Morris, to shoot into the roof of the net with his first touch.
Morris was profligate with two later chances, while Jake Gallagher and Bernard Mensah tried to salvage a consolation for Aldershot.
But Shrewsbury had barely broken sweat in progressing to the second round, leaving Aldershot in desperate need of a positive result against AFC Fylde to end a National League run of one victory in seven games.
