ASH C needed an additional player for their Aldershot League Handicap Cup match and so 16-year-old Spike Hagan stepped up to play against the Ash E team, which included his mother, Jo Bartlett.

‘Rookie’ Spike had a 19-point start on his mum and she showed no mercy at all in the first set, winning it 11-0. Clearly annoyed, Spike fought back and only lost the second 11-8.

When the final game ended 11-6 in Jo’s favour, their match was tied. However, Ash C easily won the match 61/2-21/2, with both Nigel Tustin and Frank Winnard unbeaten.

Fleet A narrowly beat Cody E 7-5. Kim Phillips won all his three singles for Cody, but doubles from David Joyce and Fallon Thompson pushed Fleet over the line.

Ash B became one of just three Division One teams through to the next round when they beat Frimley B 8-4. Paul Rumble won his three in dominant style and also one of the doubles. Nick Lynch supported with a pair of singles and David McKinnon won twice for Frimley.

Crawley Ridge A defeated Cody B, also by 8-4. Corin Moore was unbeaten in singles for the Camberley outfit and was supported by Phil Garrett with a double. Cody’s Duncan Sibbick also claimed two.

Ash G fielded only two players against Tennis E and duly lost. Andy Murdock won his two singles for Tennis, as did Chris Payne for Ash.

Tennis J lost 41/2-71/2 to Cody F. Vic King was Cody’s star performer with three singles. John Asprey won twice and tied in his other singles, while Tennis took all three doubles matches.

In Division? One, Central A recorded 8-2 victories against both Frimley A and Tennis D. Paul Baker was unbeaten in both matches, with Phil Snelson securing two wins against Frimley. Peter Millard and Robin Pretty picked up doubles against Tennis, but neither could get the better of Michael Kwan.

Bentley A moved up the table with an 8-2 success against Central B. Steve French and Andy Mudie both recorded maximums.

In the Division Two Cup, Bentley B progressed to the semi-finals with a 6-3 victory over Cody A. Robin Street won all three and team-mate Phil Hales took two, as did Cody’s Keith Russell.
