Second year physics students from Alton College and HSDC Havant have visited the European Organisation for Nuclear Research - commonly known as CERN - near Geneva in Switzerland.

The three-day trip was for students to gain an insight into particle physics, including a chance to learn more about the Large Hadron Collider - the world’s largest particle accelerator, which stretches for 17 miles in circumference under the French-Swiss border.

They also explored Geneva, including the Jet d’Eau fountain, the World Trade Organisation, the History of Science Museum, St Pierre Cathedral and the city’s branch of the United Nations.

Science lecturer Geoffrey Whittington said: “The guided tour of CERN was a really great opportunity for students to obtain a greater understanding of particle physics.”
