FOR the past 23 years the Alton-based Dando family have been raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society, in memory of Kate’s dad, Leonard, and Trevor’s mum, Rose, and for the many friends whose lives have been affected by the disease and dementia.

And now Kate has pledged to dye her hair ‘blue’ in aid of the cause.

The announcement was made at the annual Alzheimer afternoon, held in August and organised by Kate and Trevor Dando and family, which was well supported as usual, with those unable to come along in person giving generous donations toward this charity event.

More than £400 was raised.

Held at All Saints’ Church Hall on Ackender Road, the event featured a talk by Alzheimer ambassador Terry Eccott, who gave an update on his current activities in promoting dementia-friendly transport and dementia-friendly towns and cities.

He also said that this year’s sponsored event would be ‘Going Blue for Alzheimer’s’.

In thanking them for their work on behalf of the Alzheimer’s Society, Terry said: “Kate and her family are just amazing as they have raised the incredible amount of over £20,000 in the last 23 years and they have my and the Alzheimer’s Society’s utmost respect and a huge thank you for their commitment over the years.”

This year, Kate announced she would like to do something a little different and something that is less physically demanding for an older woman, so she has booked an appointment with her hairdresser on September 20 to dye her hair blue!

Aged 75, and never having had her hair dyed before, she admitted it was “a very bold step”. Her friend, Sally May, has bravely decided to join her in the blue rinse look.

The intrepid pair are hoping to raise at least £500 and are currently seeking sponsorship.
