AN Alton couple are counting themselves lucky after a return flight from Australia, delayed by volcanic ash from Iceland, left them stranded in Rome.

While the unscheduled delay could have been a living nightmare, for Paddy and Annis Mendham it turned out to be a delightful and unexpected end to a perfect six-week holiday.
