A pair of ambitious students look set to make the grade after getting a helping hand from Alton Rotary Club.
Members were recently given an end-of-term update on the progress and plans of two Alton College students who have been supported by club scholarships.
River Cavanagh is looking to make big waves in marine engineering as the first-year mathematics student from Aldershot has just received a grant.
He’s used part of the grant to buy a laptop while his job target is becoming a Royal Navy officer.
Promising electrician and second-year student Oliver Sercombe is already making connections as he’s been getting hands-on experience with a local firm.
But even more impressively, the student has even set up his own company, Flying Sparks Electrical Engineering Ltd, and is taking on real world projects.
Oliver, who has been studying technical and mathematic subjects relating to electrical engineering, has been working for CMC Electrical at locations ranging from wineries and shopping centres to solar panel farms.
He’s also installed electric vehicle charging points, control panels and smart heating systems through his own firm, with the bright spark also opening trade accounts and negotiating prices.
“Every job has taught me something new,” said Oliver.
“Balancing all this with college studies hasn’t always been easy but I made the decision to prioritise gaining practical experience first.
In due course, Oliver hopes to go to university to study Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and then take his company, Flying Sparks, full-time.
He added: “I’m incredibly grateful to Alton College for the support, guidance and flexibility that’s allowed me to start carving my own path in industry while still studying. I’m excited about what comes next.”
