THE Butts green in Alton will be transported back to Victorian times this Sunday (June 24) for the annual Victorian Charity Cricket Tournament.
This year’s event will be raising money for Bushy Leaze Children and Families Centre, a local charity providing a valuable range of outreach services and facilities for families and children from the early stages of pregnancy to when children start school.
Opening at 9.45am when the Mayor of Alton bowls the first ball, the competition will feature ten local teams including last year’s winners, The Harvesters who will be hoping to retain the title by fighting off the opposition: Warren Powell Richards (Gold Sponsor), The Eight Bells, Alton College, Alton Masons, The French Horn, The Bakers Arms, Bushy Leaze, Castle of Comfort and The Railway Arms.
Team players will be wearing Victorian clothing in a bid to take the title of best dressed team from last years holders, Alton College.
There will be a raffle with a first prize of 500 guineas, and a host of other prizes donated by local businesses including tickets to Glorious GoodWood, a car service from JD Motors and a pair of Harlequins RFC tickets.
In addition there will be stalls, food outlets and refreshments such as Ian Burrows beer tent and a Prosecco and Gin bar, as well a entertainment for families with children, including with a bouncy castle, ice-cream and horse and cart rides.
The event is sponsored by Warren Powell-Richards (gold) Kemp and Stevens and Alton Sports Centre (silver), and Specsavers and Westwood Travel (bronze).
