ALTON Town Council came under fire last week over their plans to sell off sports centre land, with the scheme being described as "absolutely mad" and "premature".

Town councillors agreed last month to "enter into preliminary discussions" about the possible sale of its land adjacent to the sports centre, with the aim of finding a "firm" proposal for how the sports centre could be replaced with developer contributions.

But some have accused the council of "getting ahead of themselves" and putting the "cart before the horse" as residents have not yet been consulted.
