ALTON Town Council has agreed to consider the appointment of a mayor’s cadet to accompany the mayor during his 2018/19 term of office on civic and ceremonial occasions.
The decision, taken at full council on February 7, was triggered by a request from the Alton Air Cadet Force and would be open in future to any young person attending the town’s uniformed organisations, and at the discretion of the town mayor.
If the new mayor, due to be appointed in May, decides to go down this route, the mayor’s cadet will be selected at a meeting of the full council.
The town mayor’s cadet would be invested with a lapel badge and, dressed in uniform, would be expected to be present at such events as the civic service, Remembrance Sunday, festival events and celebrations, twinning celebrations, and any other occasions requested by the mayor.
