THE future of Alton railway station's historic footbridge hangs in the balance following the opening in October of a new £1.7m bridge with lifts.
Despite an assurance by South West Trains that the old footbridge would remain in use and not be removed, it has come to light that, having invested a considerable sum in the new one, South West Trains no longer wants the burden of maintenance, leaving the bridge under imminent threat.
