THE Sealed Knot gathered at the site of the Battle of Cheriton last weekend to commemorate the 370th anniversary of one of the most significant events of the English Civil War.
The battle, on March 29, 1644, represented an important Parliamentarian victory, resulting in the defeat of a Royalist army, which threw King Charles I onto the defensive for the remainder of the year.
Over the weekend, more than 100 re-enactors marched 26 miles from Basing House to Wield, near Alton, moving the following day through Bishops Sutton to Cheriton, where a wreath was laid and a service held, before members staged a skirmish on the battle site at Scrubbs Farm.
