ALTON police station was cordoned off on Friday evening after a Second World War hand grenade was handed in over the counter.
A member of the public turned up at the station in Orchard Lane at around 9pm to hand in a live grenade. The grenade, which was found to contain explosive material, was thought to have belonged to a member of her family.
The area was secured by local officers while specialist advice was sought from the Army.
The grenade was safely removed by an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit.
Hampshire Constabulary said: "Although the risk to the public was low the grenade was found to contain an amount of explosive."
