SEPTEMBER 21: Alton Horticultural Society meeting at Alton Community Centre for a talk by RHS gold medal winner Rosemary Hardy on ‘Autumn Herbaceous Plants’, 7.30pm. New members and visitors welcome.

SEPTEMBER 23: Alton Herald classic car show. Hundreds of classic and vintage vehicles, plus modern franchises on display in Alton town centre. Music and dancing in the Market Square, market on the High Street.

SEPTEMBER 23: Motown and soul night at The Crown Hotel, High Street, Alton, 8pm. DJs Christine and James Rowley, of Vintage Soul Sounds, playing 60s, 70s and 80s music in aid of Alton’s Wey Valley Radio.

SEPTEMBER 24: Car treasurer hunt in aid of Give a Dog a Home and Battersea Dogs Home, starting from The Cricketers at Kingsley. First cars leave 10.30am, with the last leaving at 12.30pm. Cost £6 per person, to include ploughman’s lunch on return to pub. To book, call 01420 476730.

SEPTEMBER 24: Alton Model Railway Group open day at the Scout HQ, Anstey Park, Alton, 10.30am-4pm. Layouts to view and an opportunity to run your own engines on the club’s test track (suit all popular gauges). Members available to chat about the club. Admission free, light refreshments available.

SEPTEMBER 25: Ropley Horticultural Society meeting at Ropley Sports Pavilion, Vicarage Lane (next to the Parish Hall) for a Gardeners’ Question Time with RHS Wisley & Sparsholt horticulture lecturer Ray Broughton, 7.45pm. Bring samples of problem plants for him to diagnose and offer solutions, and any planting or care queries. Complimentary tea and coffee, chance to bring or buy plants at sales table. Parking on site. SEPTEMBER 30: Alton Local Food Initiative harvest fest at Alton Methodist Church Hall, 10am-2pm. Celebrate the season over coffee/tea and homemade cakes, vegetable soups and bread. Featuring a special display of apple wisdom by Sparsholt College, Winchester: tasting, identification, and advice on pruning and growing English heritage apples.
